Assessment of nurses research competency
Summary:
Introduction: Assessing the research competence of nurses is a critical aspect of ensuring high quality patient care and advancing the field of nursing.
Aim: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the research competence of nurses by identifying the basic competencies, such as knowledge and skills required for research activity.
Methods: A quantitative, non-interventional study was designed and carried out, which was carried out on December 2023. The studied population consisted of Nurses of the country's General Pediatric Hospital. University and Technology trained nurses who have completed two years of probationary service and who were working at the Hospital during the study were included in the study and agreed to participate in the study by signing the informed consent form. The questionnaire of Mallidou et al. (2023) was used to evaluate the research adequacy. weighted for its use in the Greek population.
Results: 106 nurses finally took part in the study. From their answers, it was found that nurses have a moderate level of knowledge (26.92/40) and skills (22.17/30) in the field of nursing research, a level which is also moderate for the application of knowledge and skills in daily life clinical practice (14.89/25). The factors that seem to influence the score of all three sections are the educational level and the willingness to participate in scientific events (all p<0.05). Finally, a proportional relationship was found between the three categories (knowledge, skills and application of knowledge and skills).
Conclusions: The results of the study contribute significantly to the understanding of the research competence of nurses in a pediatric hospital. Further research is needed to explore the factors influencing the application of research knowledge and skills, as well as a more in-depth qualitative investigation, to capture in-depth nurses' views on nursing research.
