Study and Implementation of 5th Generation Networks connected with Non-3GPP Access Networks via the N3IWF Interface
Summary:
The present thesis analyzes the evolution of mobile communications, with a focus on 5th generation networks (5G). Specifically, it examines the architecture of 5G core networks and studies the connection of non-3GPP access networks with the 5G core network through the N3IWF interface.
The thesis includes a historical overview of the evolution of mobile networks, tracing technological progress from early stages to the present day. It emphasizes on 5th generation mobile networks, exploring their characteristics and capabilities.
A central part of the thesis is the analysis and presentation of the architecture of the 5G core network, which serves as the backbone of the 5G technology and is responsible for managing network services and resources. Detailed reference is made to the functionality of network operations as well as the protocols used.
Subsequently, a virtual 5th generation network is implemented, where instead of the traditional 5G New Radio access network, an untrusted non-3GPP access network is used. The untrusted network is hosted on a virtual machine operating within a private cloud network and is connected to the 5G core network via the "Non-3GPP interworking function" (N3IWF). The performance of the untrusted network is experimentally analyzed for different mobility scenarios and network configurations.
Through this implementation, the possibilities and challenges arising from the interconnection of 5G networks with untrusted networks are examined, providing an interesting research field in the area of mobile communications.
